Electrical Panel Upgrades Needed for EV Chargers and Heat Pumps

October 17, 2026

Adding a Level 2 EV charger or heat pump can put a large new load on your electrical system. An electrician needs to check your panel size, existing household load, available breaker space, wiring, and the electrical requirements of the new equipment. An electrical panel upgrade for an EV charger or heat pump installation may be needed when your existing service cannot safely support that added load.

Can My Electric Panel Handle an EV Charger?

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120-volt circuit and charges slowly. Level 2 charging uses 240 volts and requires a dedicated circuit sized for the charger.

Check the main breaker to see if your home has 60-, 100-, or 200-amp service, but do not use that number alone to judge available capacity. Your electrician also needs to account for large loads such as electric ranges, dryers, water heaters, cooling equipment, and heat pumps.

Our EV charger installation services include checking the electrical requirements before the charger goes in.

Home Electrical Panel Requirements for an EV Charger in Central Oregon

Many homes with Level 2 charging have 200-amp service, but a 200-amp panel does not automatically have enough capacity for every charger. A 40-amp continuous charging load generally requires a 50-amp circuit, while a 48-amp load commonly requires a 60-amp circuit.

Older 60- or 100-amp services are more likely to need changes after the home's existing electrical load is calculated.

Can My Electrical Panel Handle a Heat Pump?

Heat pump electrical requirements depend on the equipment size and manufacturer specifications. The outdoor unit, indoor equipment, and any electric backup heat all need to be included when calculating the new load.

We determine the heating and cooling load before selecting equipment through our heat pump installation services. An electrical panel upgrade for a heat pump may be needed if your existing service lacks capacity. Repeated breaker trips or other heat pump issues after installation can point to an electrical or equipment problem that needs testing.

Heat Pump Electrical Panel Requirements in Central Oregon

Do not choose a heat pump based only on Oregon winters. House size, insulation, windows, construction, and the heating load determine the equipment size.

A 200-amp panel may have room for a heat pump along with major appliances, but the load calculation still needs to confirm it. Homes with 100-amp service need especially careful evaluation before adding a large electrical load.

Cost of an Electrical Panel Upgrade for EV Chargers and Heat Pumps

Panel-upgrade cost depends on the electrical work required. Moving from an older service to a larger panel can involve the panel itself, breakers, wiring, service equipment, labor, permits, and utility coordination.

We determine the types of electric panel upgrades needed after checking your service size, available capacity, and new equipment load.

Factors Affecting the Cost of an Electrical Panel Upgrade

While the equipment installed is a major factor in the cost of EV or heat pump additions, other factors must be weighed to get a clear picture of the final price. Things that will be considered in your estimate are:

  • EV charger level and circuit requirements
  • Heat pump size and electrical specifications
  • Existing household electrical load
  • Current panel and service size
  • Damaged or outdated wiring that needs replacement
  • Panel location and accessibility

Rebates and Incentives to Help Cover Costs in Oregon

Since EV chargers reduce fuel use and help the environment, Oregon provides a couple of different rebate and incentive options to lower the overall cost of the installation once it’s complete. Available programs depend on your utility, equipment, and eligibility.

  • PGE Smart Charging: Eligible PGE customers can receive incentives for qualifying Level 2 home charging equipment and installation through current PGE programs.
  • Pacific Power: Eligible Oregon residential customers can receive assistance for qualifying Level 2 home charging equipment or a 240-volt EV-charging outlet.

Check your utility's current program requirements before purchasing equipment because eligibility, incentive amounts, and available funding can change.

How to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

If you need to upgrade your electrical panel as part of the installation process, Roth Home can assist. Our electricians start by inspecting the existing service and completing a load calculation. We then determine the panel, service, breaker, and wiring changes required for the EV charger or heat pump.

The electrical permit is obtained before the upgrade. After installation, the work is inspected and tested before the new equipment is connected.

Panel work is not a DIY project. Service conductors and panel components can expose you to severe shock, fire, and code hazards.

Do I Need a Permit to Upgrade My Electrical Panel in Portland and Bend, OR?

Yes. Electrical panel upgrades require permitting and inspection. Portland specifically requires a residential electrical permit when replacing a service panel. Bend also requires electrical permits for electrical installations outside its limited list of exempt minor work.

When a licensed electrical contractor performs the project, the contractor handles the applicable permit process and coordinates required inspections.
